Reflection
Being a mentor in the 4H program taught me many life skills and gave me opportunities that will help me in my future. My leadership skills were better developed from this project and experience. I was able to participate and engage with young women/students for a couple of hours each week through the 4H program. I was a role-model to these girls and someone extra for them to look up to and engage with. As a mentor I was an advocate to students, there was always somebody looking up to me. I learned quickly to be positive and patient as the student was often needy and questioned me often. My leadership skills were developed from this because it takes a leader to be an advocate and always be there for somebody. I also learned to stick up for myself and for my student when dealing with other people. The student I mentored had a hard time communicating with others and I have not always been open to meeting new people and communicating with them either. I have previously had quite a shy personality and mentoring really opened me up and made me less shy. As a mentor I also dealt with parents and teachers and had to come up with schedules and plans that would best help their student. All of these things along with others truly made me a better leader. I was inspired to be a better person and stick out in the world. I realized I need to not worry about what others think and just do what is best for me and those around me. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to be a mentor. The quality of leadership skills along with others made me realize how important it is to be a leader and show those skills and use them in my everyday life. I also developed and increased my skills of confidence, patience, kindness, open-mindedness, love, dedication, and responsibility. I am grateful that Southern Utah University requires these courses and projects as they are a great opportunity to learn these skills along with others. The experiences and skills I learned will help me be a better employee and person in life.
Deliverables:
