Press Release

September 14, 2016-Cedar City, UT

The Utah State extension office has a program for mentoring in our community. The overall goals for the 4H mentoring program is to improve student's academic performace, enhance social skills and stregthen family bonds. As a mentor in the 4H program I was able to help students who needed help with social enhancement. I met with my students once a week during the semester. I was able to help them with homework and attend activities with them.

The 4H mentoring program has one on one and group mentoring systems. They place the students that are needing help in one of these systems that they feel will help them best. The program also puts on activities and events once a month called family night out events and 4H activities. These events are an opportunity for students, mentors and families to engage with peers and families that may be struggling with a similar issue. On weeks that these events do not take place, mentors meet with their students at home, at school or in the community to get them involved and help them with any of thier needs.

My opportunity to mentor was a part of a program at SUU called Education Designed to Give Experience (EDGE). Students are given the opportunity to engage in a service project that gives them a chance to engage in a track of their choice: Creativity, Community, Global, Leadership, and Outdoor. Mentoring was under the leadership track and I truly developed leadership skills through this project. The opportunity I had to be a mentor gave many life skills and friendships that I will forever cherish.
