Mentoring to Help Children Gain Success

I mentored under the direction of the Utah State Extension office in Cedar City. I know that I truly helped people by performing this service of being a mentor. The mentoring program is given students’ names in our community by parents and schools that need extra help. They may be struggling with grades or with finding friends or with family life. The program then takes these students and assigns them to a mentor. As their mentor I would take the student and help them to the best of my ability. When I was given a student I talked with their parents and/or teachers and then met with the student at least once a week for a couple hours during the school year. I did this project because I love to serve and help others and this was a perfect opportunity to do so. By doing this project I had many experiences that will help me in my life. It truly changed me by making me a better person. This opportunity helped me strive to want to help and serve others like I always have. It gave me experiences and friendships that will be with me forever and skills that will help me in my career of being a mom and also being in the early childhood program as I help young students. This project was a great experience that taught me many life lessons.

Project Overview

At Home Mentoring

Most of the mentoring I was able to take part in was at home mentoring or one on one mentoring. I was able to go to my student's house and help her with homework and chores. We also went out on a few "dates" and were able to go get treats, go to the movies, carve pumpkins and have a fun together.

Family Night Out

The 4H program offers family night out activities for all of their mentors and students. I was able to take my student to a few of these activities which allowed her to meet new friends and peers.
